Post subject:  Growling!?!

I have a 14 weeks old Basset and here lately he has started to growl whenever he comes toward someone to play. Is this normal behaviour? I am not fimiliar with the breed at all. I have had a few pups in my life and have never come accross one that did this. If this is not normal behaviour, what can I do to discourage him from doing it? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Bassets can be very vocal, and can use a very wide range of sounds. Our male actually makes a sound at times that reminds me of whale song. Our bassets are 6 months old and do growl, but usually only at each other, and even then only when playing, never in any actual aggression. Bassets in general are usually very friendly, and often submissive. At only 14 weeks I would expect it is just a play thing. Our previous basset only growled when playing tug of war.

They usually are willing to do almost anything for a treat. So if you want to modify a behavior, keep treats handy.

This is a question rather than any help offered ? Just wondering how your dog is now, I have a 13 week old puppy who is not growling but barking, lunging and biting. Advice I have been given so far is that it's play but it is very frustrating and also sore. I haven't come across this before and wondered how yours was now. Hopefully this won't last long.
