Hi My 8 week old basset is constantly biting and nipping at my hands and shoes or anwhere he can get his teeth into bottom of trousers etc.

Ive tried saying no or stop in loud tone but it does not seem to stop him. is this just him playing with me? As it now getting to the point that every time i stroke or pet him he wants to chew on me or my hand. sometimes agressively as well.

Has anybody got and tips on how to combat this problem at an early stage?

Thanks and regards

Thats typical of puppies............when he was with is littermates, he played rough with them. That is how they play.

One thing I use on stubborn puppies that want to play rough like that with the hands is a simple product called BITTER APPLE or BITTER LIME -- it is a taste deterrent that is suppose to taste unpleasant.

I use that with the no commands.

..................sometimes, they like the taste deterrent and it defeats the purpose.

for furniture i would use good old fashioned ENGLISH MUSTARD!!!! Clothes and body parts i'm afraid that up to you with the NO or A A A. I found that the A A A worked better on Dinky.

It sounds like he's teething at the moment and suffering badly with the pain. Have you tried The Kong toys? and fill them up with Puppy squirty stuff (in small doses to begin with).
A large carrot, put in in the freezer for a couple of hours, let him chew on it....but expect lots of mess of tiny carrot pieces lol. The ice from the carrot cools the gums.
A very large rawhide but HIGH supervision is required!

Any other help, just ask ;-)

Thanks very much for the help guys.

He's getting better now. Ive only had him a week and he is now letting me stroke him without going for me most of the time.

I think your right he is teething and in a bit of pain the poor little thing.
